Peter  Kolacz

Canadian painter Peter Kolacz (1968- ) burst onto the art scene in 1989 when the Soho International Competition awarded him third prize out of a field of more than 3000 entrants. He was a member of the Arts Student League in New York at the time and later went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw (1990-1992).

Kolacz is a master of the art of encaustic, an ancient painting technique revived in the 19th century and gaining in popularity despite (or perhaps due to) its demanding characteristics. Molten beeswax is mixed with pigment and small amounts of resin to create a workable painting medium that affords rich texture and luminous color. Kolacz must move quickly and expertly to create the desired effects on each successive layer (which must be fused together with heat for permanency) to create his amazing abstracted landscapes. This dance between the artist and his materials parallels Kolacz’s artistic philosophy: "A canvas to me is a discourse, not a monologue...Painting in my lexicon is a mode of reasoning between the artist and the world around him."

An encaustic paint film is stable in a temperature range of approximately 40-110°F (4-44°C).
